Write a sentence using a modal for each of the following situations.  There may be several possibilities.  Then go through and think of ways to rewrite the sentence in the negative.
1.     You are going to be late for work, but your mother insists that breakfast is necessary before leaving.
(Possibility:  “You should eat breakfast before going to work.”)

2.     You have the possibility of taking a vacation in March if all goes well at work.
(Possibility: “I might be able to go to the Caribbean if things are not too busy.”)
3.     You want to ask your professor if it is possible for you to leave class early for a test in another class.
(Possibility: “May I leave class 10 minutes early today so that I will arrive on time for my test?”)

4.     Your best friend intends on going out with you this evening, provided that she finishes her homework.
(Possibility: I should be able to go to the movies with you tonight if I can finish my homework during the study hall after school.)
5.     The weather channel indicates that rain is possible for tomorrow.
 (Possibility: It may/might rain tomorrow.)
6.     Since your friend, who is never late, has still not arrived 30 minutes after your proposed meeting time, you suggest possible situations.
